Micron also called um is a length unit which is 0.001mm or 0.00003937inch, usually to describe the tiny particles size, and aperture size of the mesh fabric in industrial filtration. The Micron size of mesh should be smaller than the particle size in the fluid to capture them.

Mesh to Micron conversion. This precise mesh to micron conversion tool has been specifically designed to help engineers calculate what they need to ensure their business’ product is processed accurately, and that they choose the appropriate mesh screen for their application.
At some point the mesh number becomes so high that the percentage of open area is too low to be useful. This point is usually somewhere between 450 and 700 mesh depending on the diameter of the wire or filament used. Note: Beyond 325 to 400 mesh, particle size is normally described only in microns. Mesh is the unit to measure the pore size of a sieve, defined as the number of pores per inch in a sieve. The larger the mesh, the smaller the pores. Because the standard in different countries varies, the conversion of mesh to micron is also different. The table below shows the conversion of mesh and micron (for reference only).
Mesh size is not a precise measurement of particle size. Screens can be made with different thicknesses of wire, the thicker the wires, the smaller the particle size passing through that screen, and vice versa. A micron is another measurement used for measuring particle size. A micron is a linear measurement of size described in metric terms.
How to read and write Mesh, Particle Size(mm, microns) "+200mesh" means that particle size is larger/more coarse than 200mesh(or 74microns). "-200mesh" means that particle size is smaller/finer than 200 mesh(or 74 microns).
Grit Size to Micron Chart . You might be thinking to yourself what the terms grit, micron, and mesh might mean? These are all terms that are used to describe particle sizes. When buying a compound that states it’s 10 000 grit, it does not necessarily mean that all the contents inside are that particular size.

A 140-mesh screen has 140 openings, and so on. Therefore, as the mesh number increases, the size of the openings decreases. Note Mesh size is not a precise measurement of particle size because of the size of the wire used in the screen. Beyond 400 mesh, particle size is normally defined only in "microns."

The term ‘Mesh’ is used to describe the size of an abrasive particle. In some instances, such as with Aluminum Oxide Grit or Silicon Carbide Grit, a single number is used. This does not mean every particle in that product is exactly that size but rather than mesh size indicator is approximately the mean or average size of the range of particles in that grade.

For example, if the particle size of a material is described as -4 +40 mesh, then 90% or more of the material will pass through a 4-mesh sieve (particles smaller than 4.76 mm) and be retained by a 40-mesh sieve (particles larger than 0.420 mm).

A 100-mesh has 100 openings, and so on. As the mesh size increases, the particle size decreases for finer material. Mesh size is not a precise measurement of particle size. Linear Equivalents: 1 micron = .00003964 inches ∙ 25,400 microns = 1 inch ∙ 1,000 microns = 1 millimeter Naked-eye visibility threshold = 40 microns
The larger the mesh number, the smaller the particle size it can filter; The larger the micron number, the larger the particle size it can filter. Mesh number is derived from the number of openings per linear inch; therefore, a 100-mesh screen has 100 openings per linear inch. The sizes of mesh openings (mesh size) are approximate.
